Easter in Tuscany, in a villa of your own
Easter arrives in Tuscany with the first green of spring. The vines begin to bud, wild flowers fill the fields, and Holy Week brings processions through the villages and a table built around lamb, artichokes, eggs and colomba, the dove shaped cake. In Florence, Easter Sunday is marked by the Scoppio del Carro, when an ornate cart is set alight with fireworks outside the cathedral, a custom centuries old.
A villa suits the season, gathering the family for a long weekend or a full week. Below you will find a 16th century country house above Donoratico with a tower bedroom, a 19th century farmhouse on 35 hectares of Bolgheri wine country with 360 degree views, and a hilltop house between the two Spanish fortresses of Porto Ercole.

The Easter season table brings roast lamb, young artichokes, and raw broad beans eaten with pecorino straight from the pod.
Easter Monday is a national holiday, traditionally spent on a picnic or a long lunch in the countryside with friends.
Days can be warm enough to eat outside, while evenings still call for a fire or heating. Pack layers.

Questions before you choose
Can we swim in Tuscany at Easter?
The sea is cold at Easter, and most pools do not open until May. Some owners can open or heat a pool earlier by arrangement; we ask for you.
Can we book a short stay over Easter?
Often, yes. Outside summer many owners accept stays of a few nights. Tell us your dates and choose up to five villas, and a person will respond within one working day.
Are shops open over Easter?
Most shops close on Easter Sunday and many on Easter Monday, so plan the shopping in advance, or ask whether the villa can arrange a cook.
