Inland Puglia has almost no rivers, and water here has always been precious: the old masserie gathered every drop of rain in cisterns cut into the limestone. Today the water is for swimming, and a pool among olive trees, with a trullo at one end and the Adriatic a pale line on the horizon, is the classic view of the Valle d'Itria.
All 37 villas below have a private pool. They include a modern villa outside Carovigno with an infinity pool among dry stone walls, a 19th century masseria above Ostuni with an 11 m square pool, and a masseria near Savelletri with a 200 m² heated pool and sea view suites.

The plateau sits a few hundred metres above sea level, so afternoons by the pool are often fresher than on the coast.
In May and October ask for a heated pool; nights in the valley are cooler than by the sea, and unheated water cools quickly.
Some estates use restored trulli as guest rooms or annexes; their thick stone walls stay cool through the hottest afternoons.

Questions before you choose
When can we swim in the pools?
Owners generally open pools from May to October. From June to September unheated water is comfortable; in the shoulder months a heated pool is worth asking for, and heating may carry a separate charge.
Is the pool overlooked by neighbours?
Villas here generally stand in their own land behind walls, olive trees or hedges. Where a pool is overlooked, for example by an owner's house on the estate, the listing says so.
