Autumn in the Valle d'Itria, from a quiet villa
Autumn in the Valle d'Itria is the season of oil. From late October the olive groves fill with nets and ladders, the mills work late, and the new oil, green and peppery, is poured over toasted bread the day it is pressed. The towns are quiet again, the air smells of wood smoke, and a walk between the trulli takes place in soft, low sunlight.
Among the 37 villas below are a 19th century fortified masseria among ancient olive groves near Fasano, a masseria near Savelletri in eight hectares of centuries old olive trees with a heated pool, and a restored hillside villa above Monopoli with a private wood and views across the fields to the Adriatic.

Some mills welcome visitors during the harvest, when you can taste oil straight from the press with bread and a pinch of salt.
Locorotondo's white wine and the reds of the surrounding hills are poured young in autumn, with local cheeses and capocollo from Martina Franca.
October is often mild and bright, November cooler and wetter; a villa with a fireplace or a heated pool makes the season comfortable.

Questions before you choose
Is autumn a good time to visit?
Yes, for those who prefer food, walking and quiet towns to beaches. October can still be warm enough for a swim; by November days are cool and some coastal restaurants close for the winter.
Will the villa pool be open?
Pools are usually open from May to October, so an October stay often includes the pool, though unheated water will be cool. In November most pools are closed; ask about heated options.
Can we stay for less than a week?
Generally, yes. Outside high season many owners accept shorter stays, and the Saturday to Saturday rule mainly applies in summer. Send one request for up to five villas and we reply within one working day.
