Autumn suits the country around Cortona. The grape harvest ends, the olive groves on the terraces below the town fill with nets and ladders, and the mills begin pressing the new oil. Mushrooms and chestnuts come down from the wooded hills of the Casentino, and Arezzo's churches, with their celebrated frescoes by Piero della Francesca, are calm enough to linger in.
