Rome, October and November

Autumn villas in Rome and the Lazio countryside

Autumn is Rome at its most generous. The summer heat has gone, the stone of the city glows in a low amber light, and the countryside around it is busy with the harvest: grapes in the Castelli Romani, chestnuts and hazelnuts in the Cimini hills, and olives in the Sabina, one of Italy's oldest oil producing areas. By November, the new oil is poured green and peppery over grilled bread.

Among the 39 villas below, a 16th century estate in 31 hectares of vineyards has a garden set with works by Anish Kapoor, Banksy and Mitoraj. Near Vetralla, a horse breeding estate has a courtyard of ancient Roman basalt and an Etruscan grotto, and in the city a 1950s villa built by Aldo Gucci sits in 7,000 sqm of Camilluccia parkland with rooftop views.

The new olive oil

Olives are pressed from late October, and freshly milled oil from the Sabine hills is one of the season's great pleasures.

Truffles and porcini

Autumn menus in Lazio turn to wild mushrooms and black truffle, often brought in from the hills of neighbouring Umbria.

Museums without the queues

With fewer visitors than in spring or summer, the Vatican Museums and the Borghese Gallery are easier to enjoy slowly.

Good to know

Questions before you choose

Is autumn a good time to visit Rome?

It is one of the best. October is usually warm and settled; November is cooler and brings more rain, but also quieter streets and the new oil and wine.

Should we stay in the city or the countryside?

For museums and dinners in town, a villa within Rome is easiest. For the harvest, horses and long lunches, the estates in the Sabine hills and near Vetralla suit better; many guests divide their stay.

What happens after we send an enquiry?

We check your dates with the owners of up to five villas you select and reply within one working day with availability and price. Outside high season, stays are often more flexible.
