Easter in Rome, from a private villa
There is no Easter quite like Rome's. Holy Week is marked by the Way of the Cross at the Colosseum on Good Friday and by Easter Sunday Mass in St Peter's Square, followed by the Pope's blessing to the city and the world. Around the rites, the city is in spring bloom, and Roman tables fill with lamb, artichokes and cheese bread made for the feast.
The villas below give you calm to return to. In the city, the noble wing of a 17th century Borghese palace has frescoed salons and a domed chapel bedroom, and a 17th century villa on ground known to Etruscans and Romans has its own chapel and historic gardens. Outside Rome, a 70 hectare estate in the Sabine hills has an infinity pool filled with Nepi mineral spring water.

Places at the main Holy Week ceremonies are free but must be requested in advance from the Vatican; standing room in the square needs no ticket.
Roman artichokes are in season around Easter, served braised alla romana or fried whole in the Jewish tradition.
On Easter Monday Romans head out for picnics and long lunches, a good day to be at a country estate rather than in town.

Questions before you choose
Is Rome very busy at Easter?
Yes, the Vatican and the historic centre draw large crowds throughout Holy Week. A villa with a garden, or an estate outside the city, gives you somewhere quiet between the ceremonies.
What is the weather like in Rome at Easter?
Spring is usually mild and bright, with cool evenings and the odd shower. Pools generally open in May, so an early Easter is more about gardens and terraces than swimming.
How do we book a villa for Holy Week?
Name up to five villas and your dates in one request; each owner is asked directly, and our answer on availability and price follows within one working day. Easter weeks are popular, so early enquiries help.
