Umbria, Holy Week

Easter in Umbria, in a castle or country villa

Umbria, the land of St Francis and St Benedict, keeps Holy Week with particular devotion. In Assisi and in many smaller hill towns, Good Friday processions move through streets lit by torches and candles, and churches that are quiet the rest of the year fill with music and ritual. Around them, the countryside is at its freshest green, with wild flowers along the lanes.

The houses below make a gathering place for the holiday. A medieval castle that once defended Gubbio against Perugia stands on a promontory within 500 hectares of parkland facing Mount Cucco. An 11th century castle near Perugia has its own restored church, and an estate at Monte Castello di Vibio has a heated indoor pool, welcome while spring evenings are still cool.

The Umbrian Easter breakfast

On Easter morning families share torta di Pasqua, a tall cheese bread, with cured capocollo, boiled eggs and a glass of red wine.

Processions on Good Friday

Assisi, Gubbio and many villages hold solemn Good Friday processions. Arrive early and dress warmly: evenings in the hills can be cold.

Indoor water, outdoor walks

With outdoor pools usually opening in May, a heated indoor pool is worth seeking. Spring is excellent weather for walking the Francis paths.

Questions before you choose

What is the weather like at Easter?

Spring in Umbria is changeable: mild, bright days alternate with rain, and nights can be cool. Houses with fireplaces and heating are comfortable whatever the weather.

Can we book a villa for a short Easter stay?

Often, yes, since Easter falls outside the summer weekly season. Some owners still ask for a minimum number of nights, which we confirm for you.

How do we reach the villas?

Perugia airport is closest. Rome Fiumicino and Florence are about two hours away by car. We recommend hiring a car, as most villas lie in open countryside.
