Summer in Umbria, from a private villa

Umbria is the only region of central Italy without a coastline, and its summer is built around other pleasures: the green hills, the medieval towns of Assisi, Spello and Todi, long dinners outdoors and, on the western edge, the wide still water of Lake Trasimeno. Days are hot, but the altitude of the hill towns brings fresh evenings.

Water is at the centre of the houses below. On a hilltop above Monte del Lago, an 18 m infinity pool faces Trasimeno and its three islands. Near Perugia, a C shaped infinity pool of 130 sqm has a Jacuzzi spilling into it like a waterfall, facing Antognolla Castle. For a large gathering, an estate of a main house and five cottages sleeps 43 guests, with panoramic outdoor and heated indoor pools.

Lake Trasimeno by boat

Ferries cross from the lakeside towns to Isola Maggiore and Isola Polvese, with shaded walks, lake fish and a quieter pace than the coast.

Cool mornings for the towns

Visit Assisi, Perugia or Orvieto early in the day, then return to the pool through the hottest hours of the afternoon.

Dinners under the loggia

Many Umbrian houses have covered loggias, pizza ovens or firepits, as one on the Tuscan border does. Summer evenings are spent outdoors.
