Summer in Ravello, from a villa above the sea
Ravello sits about 350 m above the sea, and in summer that height is felt. Evenings are a little cooler than on the shore, the air carries the scent of lemon groves, and the view runs along the whole Gulf of Salerno. Days follow a gentle rhythm in a town long associated with music: a swim before the heat, lunch in the shade, and a walk to the piazza when the light turns gold.
The villas below make the most of the hillside. One has a 16 m pool on a sheer cliff within walking distance of the town, with majolica floors and a playground. On the slope above Atrani, a rooftop gazebo holds a heated Jacuzzi for six over a 13 m pool among lemon trees. Near Scala, a 500 sqm house sits in a 4,000 sqm park with wisteria porticos and a sports court.

At roughly 350 m, Ravello often catches a breeze when the coast below is still warm. A light layer for dinner outdoors is rarely wasted.
Atrani, Minori and Amalfi lie below, reached by road, bus or old stepped paths. Go to the beach early, before the midday heat.
Parking in Ravello is limited in summer. A driver for arrivals and for evening dinners along the coast saves a great deal of effort.

Questions before you choose
Is Ravello too hot in July and August?
It is warm, but the altitude and the sea breeze make it more comfortable than the shore. Afternoons belong to the shade or the pool; villa pools are usually open from May to October.
What is the nearest airport?
Naples is the usual choice, around 90 minutes to two hours by car. Salerno, with its high speed rail station and summer ferries to Amalfi, is under an hour away by road.
What is the minimum stay in summer?
From June to August most villas rent for a full week, Saturday to Saturday. Shorter stays are sometimes possible at the edges of the season, and we ask the owner for you when you enquire.
