Sorrento, June to August

Summer in Sorrento, in a villa facing Capri

Sorrento is the easiest corner of this coast to reach. The town sits on tuff cliffs above the Gulf of Naples, with Vesuvius across the water, while the peninsula runs west through olive groves to Massa Lubrense and Nerano, where Capri seems close enough to touch. Summer days here belong to the sea, with boats to the island and swims from small coves.

Among the villas below, a private funicular runs from the garden terraces to a small pebble beach below Marina del Cantone. Above Termini, a rustic villa with a guest house and studio has a path down to a pebble cove facing Capri. Above the bay of Nerano, 10 sea view bedrooms come with four terraces, an infinity pool and a hammock under an olive tree, and in Massa Lubrense an estate built in 1769 has two pools and orange groves.

Capri within half an hour

Fast ferries from Sorrento's Marina Piccola reach Capri in around 20 to 30 minutes, which makes a morning on the island easy.

Spaghetti alla Nerano

The fishing village of Nerano gave its name to spaghetti with fried courgettes and provolone del Monaco, best eaten facing the sea.

Swimming from platforms

Much of Sorrento's shoreline is cliff, so bathing is often from wooden platforms built out over the water rather than from wide beaches.
