Summer in Nerano and Massa Lubrense, villas by the sea
At the tip of the Sorrento Peninsula, where the land narrows towards Capri, summer runs at a slower pace than on the busier coasts either side. Mornings belong to the water: the Punta Campanella marine reserve keeps the sea around Nerano remarkably clear, and the bay of Ieranto is reached by boat or by a footpath through the maquis. Evenings end at Marina del Cantone, over spaghetti alla Nerano made with fried courgettes.
The villas below meet the heat with shade, height and water. One stands in a 2 hectare garden of olive and lemon trees, with 12 double bedrooms and an infinity pool facing Capri; another has a private funicular down to a pebble beach; a third offers 10 sea view bedrooms, four terraces and a hammock under an olive tree.

Protected waters around Punta Campanella keep the seabed rich in fish and seagrass. Bring a mask: the snorkelling starts a few strokes from the shore.
The island lies a short crossing away. Hiring a traditional gozzo with a skipper from Marina del Cantone is the local way to see its grottoes.
July and August are hot. Locals swim early, lunch late and rest through the afternoon, while houses high on the slopes catch the evening breeze.

Questions before you choose
When is the sea warmest?
The water warms through June and reaches its peak in August, when long swims are comfortable. Early September often keeps that warmth, with quieter coves.
Do villas rent for a full week in summer?
In June, July and August most villas rent Saturday to Saturday for at least seven nights. Shorter stays are sometimes possible at the edges of the season, and we are glad to ask the owner.
Is a car necessary?
It helps. The roads to Nerano and Termini are narrow and winding and buses are infrequent, so most guests hire a car or book a driver. Some houses have steps from the parking area; ask us before choosing.
