The Val d'Orcia is open country, with wide horizons and very little shade, so a pool here is both a refuge and a frame for the view. Swim to the edge and the landscape is laid out in front of you: rounded hills, a single farmhouse on a ridge, a road lined with cypresses leading nowhere in particular. Travertine, the pale stone quarried nearby, gives the best of them their warm colour.
Each of the 41 villas below has a private pool. Near Sarteano, one hilltop farmhouse has a 20 m travertine pool across the lawn and another a 16 m solar heated infinity pool set into 3 acres of gardens; among the wine estates of Montalcino a restored farmhouse has a 14 m pool looking over the hills. The finest swims come early and late, when the light lies low across the valley.

The Val d'Orcia is at its most photographed at dawn and dusk. A pool facing east or west catches one of those moments every day.
A solar heated pool keeps the water comfortable into late spring and early autumn, when unheated pools can feel cold.
Trees are few on the open hills. Check for umbrellas, a pergola or a loggia near the pool before the heat of July.

Questions before you choose
How warm is the pool water?
Unheated pools are usually pleasant from mid June to early September. In May and October the water is cool unless heated; we tell you which villas offer heating and whether it costs extra.
Can we combine a pool villa with the thermal springs?
Easily. Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo are both in the valley, and larger thermal spas nearby are open to day visitors. Many guests alternate between the two.
What happens after we send an enquiry?
You can include up to five villas in one request. A person checks availability and price with each owner and replies within one working day. In July and August most villas rent Saturday to Saturday.
