Family villas in the Val d'Orcia, with room for all
The Val d'Orcia gives families a Tuscany without crowds. Towns are small, parking is simple, and one day can hold a fortress, a gelato and a swim without feeling rushed. Montalcino's fortress has ramparts children can climb, Pienza can be crossed in 10 minutes, and in the woods of Monte Amiata, to the south, summer days are cooler than on the open hills.
Every one of the 39 villas below has at least three bedrooms and a pool or family equipment. An 800 year old village on the Via Francigena has been restored as one private estate of five houses around its own piazza, so cousins can each have a house and meet in the square; a crenellated medieval tower stands on a private 40 acre estate bordered by protected forest; and near Sarteano a hilltop farmhouse has a 16 m solar heated infinity pool.

The 14th century fortress of Montalcino has walkways along its walls, with views over the whole valley: a short visit children remember.
At Bagni San Filippo and below Bagno Vignoni, warm spring water runs in the open. Children love paddling, though the rocks can be slippery.
Distances look small on the map, but roads wind. Plan one visit a day and keep the afternoons for the pool.

Questions before you choose
Are the villas far from shops and doctors?
Each listing shows the location. Villages across the valley have pharmacies and grocers, larger supermarkets are in towns such as Montepulciano, and Siena has the main hospital.
What is the best time for a family holiday here?
June and early September offer warm pool days without the peak heat of late July. Easter and the October half term are lovely for walking, though pools usually open only from May to October.
How does the booking process work?
