Summer in the Val d'Orcia, from a hilltop villa
In early summer the Val d'Orcia turns gold. The wheat on the rounded hills ripens and is cut, leaving bales scattered across the slopes and lines of cypresses standing out against the stubble. This is the landscape the Sienese masters painted, now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and summer shows it at its most graphic, with long evenings and sharp shadows across the valley.
The 41 villas below are spread across this country of wine and wheat. There is an 800 year old village on the Via Francigena, restored as one private estate of five houses around its own piazza; a hilltop farmhouse of travertine blocks near Sarteano, above its organic vineyards, with a 20 m travertine pool; and a 900 sqm villa among vineyards and organic wheat fields, looking towards Montalcino.

Pienza, the Renaissance ideal town, gives its name to a sheep's cheese, eaten young in summer with honey or pears.
Montalcino's Brunello and Montepulciano's Vino Nobile are made a short drive apart. Visit cellars in the morning, when the hills are cooler.
In Bagno Vignoni a thermal pool fills the village square. Bathing there is not allowed, but warm streams run below the village and nearby spas welcome visitors.

Questions before you choose
How hot is the Val d'Orcia in July?
Hot, often above 30°C in the afternoon, with little shade on the open hills. Mornings and evenings are the time for walks and visits; a villa with a pool makes the middle of the day easy.
How do we get to the Val d'Orcia?
Florence and Rome Fiumicino airports are both around 2 hours away by car. Chiusi, on the Florence to Rome railway, is the nearest main station, but a car is needed to reach the villas.
What is the minimum stay in summer?
From June to August villas typically rent for a week, Saturday to Saturday. Send dates for up to five houses in one request and a person replies within one working day with prices and availability.
