Easter in the Val d'Orcia, a villa among green hills
At Easter the Val d'Orcia is green from end to end. The wheat is young, the clay hills are soft with new grass, and the roads between Pienza, San Quirico and Montalcino are nearly empty. It is a season for walking and for churches: the Via Francigena, the old pilgrim road to Rome, crosses the valley, and the abbeys of Sant'Antimo and Monte Oliveto Maggiore are within easy reach.
Among the 41 villas below is an 800 year old village on that same Via Francigena, restored as one estate of five houses around its own piazza, a fitting place for a family Easter. There is also a crenellated medieval tower on a private 40 acre estate bordered by protected forest, 15 km from Siena, and a 16th century wine estate near Montalcino, making its own wine since 1580, where dinners are served in a restored barrel cellar.

The great cloister of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, near Buonconvento, is painted with the life of Saint Benedict by Luca Signorelli and Sodoma.
Spring brings the first raw broad beans, eaten in Tuscany with young pecorino and a glass of red, often outdoors on Easter Monday.
April days can be warm in the sun, but evenings are cool. Ask about heating when you enquire; pools are usually covered until May.

Questions before you choose
Is Easter a good time for walking?
One of the best. The Via Francigena and the white roads between villages are firm and green, and temperatures are mild. The stretch from San Quirico d'Orcia to Bagno Vignoni makes an easy half day.
Will the villa pool be open at Easter?
Generally not, since pools usually open from May to October. When Easter falls late in April an owner may open early or offer heating, and we ask on your behalf.
How do we send an Easter enquiry?
Select up to five villas and send them together with your dates and the size of your party. We check each one with its owner and reply within one working day, including any minimum stay over Easter.
