Easter in Puglia, from a villa among the olives
Easter is one of the moments when Puglia is most itself. During Holy Week the confraternities walk through the old towns in slow processions, those of Taranto among the most solemn in Italy, and bands, bells and silence alternate late into the night. Easter Sunday belongs to the family table, with lamb and the decorated scarcella biscuits baked for children.
The weather is mild rather than hot, which makes a heated pool worth asking for. Among the 71 villas below are a masseria near Savelletri with a 200 m² heated pool, a seafront villa near Monopoli with a heated pool and Jacuzzi, and a 19th century fortified masseria near Fasano whose Tower Suite looks out to the Adriatic.

In Taranto, hooded members of the confraternities walk barefoot through the old town during Holy Week, one of the most moving rituals in southern Italy.
Easter menus bring lamb, fresh fava beans with wild chicory, ricotta and the sweet scarcella, baked around a whole egg.
Expect pleasant days and noticeably cooler nights; a fireplace or a heated pool adds a great deal to an Easter stay.

Questions before you choose
Is the sea warm enough to swim at Easter?
Not for most people. The sea is still cool in spring, and unheated pools may not be open yet, since pools are usually open from May to October. Ask for a heated pool if swimming matters.
Do villas rent for less than a week at Easter?
Often, yes. Outside high season many owners accept shorter stays, and the Saturday to Saturday rule applies mainly in summer. Easter weeks are popular, so enquire well ahead.
How do we see the Holy Week processions?
The processions are public and free to watch; stand along the route in the old town and arrive early on the main nights. Your villa will be a drive away, so plan parking or a driver.
