Puglia in spring, villas amid the wild flowers
Spring is when Puglia turns green. Between the stone walls of the olive groves the fields fill with poppies and wild herbs, the light is clear, and the white towns can be walked at midday without hunting for shade. Beaches that are crowded in August are almost empty, and the first swim of the year, in late May, feels earned.
Several of the 71 villas below have heated pools, which is worth knowing in April. There is a masseria in five hectares of greenery near Savelletri with a heated pool and a sea view terrace, an architect designed house in Gagliano del Capo with a courtyard pool and a sea view tower, and a whitewashed masseria near Gallipoli with two trulli in the garden.

Mild temperatures make spring the season to walk the lanes of Locorotondo, the trulli of Alberobello or the cliffs around Polignano a Mare.
Spring brings fresh fava beans, wild asparagus and bitter chicory, the backbone of the Apulian country table.
Unheated pools usually open in May; in April, or for guests who like to swim early, a heated pool keeps the water comfortable.

Questions before you choose
What is the weather like in April and May?
Mild and generally dry, with sunny days warming through May and cooler evenings. Rain is possible in April. The sea stays cool until June, though some swimmers brave it in late May.
Can we book shorter stays in spring?
Usually yes. The Saturday to Saturday week applies mostly to high summer; in spring many owners accept shorter stays. Pools are usually open from May to October, so ask about heating for April.
Which airport should we choose?
Bari for the Valle d'Itria, Monopoli and Polignano; Brindisi for Ostuni, Lecce and Salento. Both have direct European flights, with more routes in the warmer months, and a hire car is needed.
