Lake Como in spring: villas among the gardens
April and May are when the lake's great gardens are at their best. Azaleas and rhododendrons flower along the western shore, wisteria climbs the old boathouses, and the snow still lingers on the peaks above the water. The villages are open and unhurried, and a table on the terrace in the sun is warm enough for a long lunch.
The villas below suit the season's mix of bright days and cool evenings. At Onno, a contemporary house has a heated pool and hydromassage among olive trees, with its own steam room and sauna. At Blevio, an 18th century house keeps an 1865 Blüthner piano and Murano chandeliers, and at Ossuccio a late 16th century palazzo has salons painted with 17th century frescoes.

The celebrated villa gardens around Tremezzo and Bellagio are at their most colourful in late April and May, when the azaleas bloom.
Risotto with fillets of lake perch is the local classic, and spring menus often add wild asparagus and herbs from the hills.
Days can feel like early summer while evenings on the water turn cool, so a light jacket earns its place in the suitcase.

Questions before you choose
Will the pool be open in April?
Villa pools usually open from May to October. A heated pool can make late April swims pleasant, so we ask each owner when the pool opens and whether heating is included before you commit.
Is it too cold to swim in the lake in spring?
For most people, yes. The lake is fed by mountain water and warms slowly, so spring is better suited to boat trips, garden visits and walks than to swimming.
Can we stay for less than a week in spring?
Often, yes. Outside high season many owners are more flexible on length of stay. Send your dates for up to five villas at once and we will reply within one working day with what each owner accepts.
