Capri, Holy Week

Easter on Capri in a private villa

Easter is when Capri wakes from winter. Shutters open along the lanes, gardens come into bloom and the island is lived in by islanders rather than day visitors. Holy Week brings processions through the streets of Capri and Anacapri, and the tables turn to the Neapolitan Easter classics: casatiello, a rich bread baked with whole eggs in its crust, and pastiera, the wheat and ricotta tart scented with orange blossom.

It is a season for houses with character and comfortable interiors, since the evenings can still be cool. Below you will find a 300 m² living room behind floor to ceiling glass in Anacapri, a heated pool terrace above Marina Piccola with four houses in Mediterranean gardens, and a villa whose private funicular climbs to gardens of bougainvillea, roses and jasmine.

Processions in Holy Week

On Good Friday, processions move slowly through the old lanes. Watch quietly from the side: the mood is devout rather than festive.

Pastiera and casatiello

The island's bakeries prepare both through Holy Week. Order ahead, because everyone wants them on Easter Sunday.

An island still at rest

Easter comes before the summer crowds, so walks towards Villa Jovis or along the Pizzolungo path are peaceful, and the spring light is clear.

Good to know

Questions before you choose

Is it warm enough to swim at Easter?

The sea is still cool, fine for a brave dip but not for long swims. Pools usually open from May, although a heated pool, where the owner offers one, can make an earlier swim possible.

Are shops and restaurants open at Easter?

Many reopen for Easter, which traditionally marks the start of the island's season, though not every place is open yet. Book a table for Easter Sunday lunch well ahead.

Can we stay fewer than seven nights?

Outside high season many owners accept shorter stays, and Easter is often flexible. Tell us your dates and up to five villas; we check each one and reply within one working day.
