Easter in Chianti, in a villa of your own
Easter falls when Chianti is at its freshest. The vines are just coming into leaf, wisteria hangs over stone walls, and the fields between Florence and Siena are a green they will not show again until autumn. The week has its own rhythm: church bells and processions, lamb and artichokes at Sunday lunch, and a picnic on Easter Monday, which Italians call Pasquetta.
Some of the 94 villas below have chapels of their own, which feels right at this time of year. At Impruneta the Ghirlandaio family's 15th century estate has a chapel frescoed by Ridolfo Ghirlandaio; a 15th century house near Colle Val d'Elsa has a private chapel and a frescoed bedroom; and near Greve, one of four stone houses in the oak woods keeps a grand piano beside an open fire for cooler spring evenings.

On Easter Sunday Florence stages the Scoppio del Carro, an ancient ritual in which a decorated cart is set alight with fireworks outside the Duomo.
The dove shaped colomba is eaten across Italy at Easter; Tuscan families also bake schiacciata di Pasqua, a sweet bread scented with anise.
Most villa pools open in May, so an early Easter is a time for walks and long lunches. Heated indoor pools are the welcome exception.

Questions before you choose
What is the weather like in Chianti at Easter?
Changeable and mild. Days are often around 15 to 20°C, evenings cool enough for a fire, and a shower or two is likely. Pack layers, walking shoes and a light waterproof.
Can we swim over Easter?
Outdoor pools usually open from May to October, so over Easter they are normally closed. If swimming matters, a few estates on this page have heated indoor pools and we can shortlist them for you.
How far ahead should we enquire for Easter?
Large estates are reserved early for Holy Week, as many European school holidays coincide with it. Send up to five villas in one request and we reply within one working day.
