Christmas in Chianti, by the fire in your own villa
In winter Chianti goes quiet. The vines are bare, smoke rises from farmhouse chimneys, and on clear days the hills stand out sharply against a pale sky. Christmas here is a family affair centred on the table: crostini, pasta in broth, a roast, and panforte with vin santo, followed at New Year by cotechino and lentils, eaten for prosperity in the months ahead.
Florence and Siena, both within reach, are at their most local in December. Among the 94 villas below, three restored houses on a hillside below Panzano include two with heated indoor pools, so a winter swim is possible; near Greve, one of four stone houses in oak woods has a grand piano beside an open fire; and a 16th century ducal estate above Figline Valdarno looks across to the Apennines, sometimes dusted with snow.

Churches across Chianti set up a presepe in December, some with figures carved generations ago. They stay in place until Epiphany on 6 January.
December is one of the calmer months in Florence. Museums and churches are quieter, and the streets are lit for the season.
Nights can fall close to freezing on the hills. Ask about heating, fireplaces and firewood; we check each with the owner before you book.

Questions before you choose
Is Chianti cold at Christmas?
Cool rather than harsh: days around 8 to 12°C, colder at night, with occasional frost and rare snow on higher ground. Stone houses stay comfortable when properly heated, which we confirm for every villa.
Are restaurants open over Christmas?
Many close on Christmas Day and some take a break in January. Book Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve dinners early, or ask us whether a cook can come to the villa.
What is the minimum stay at Christmas?
Festive weeks are popular and owners often ask for seven nights or more. Choose up to five villas, send one request with your dates, and we reply within one working day with each owner's terms.
