Christmas in Tuscany from a villa by the sea
Tuscany in December belongs to the people who live there. The coast between Livorno and the Argentario is quiet, the air is mild enough for a walk on the beach after lunch, and the new season's olive oil, green and peppery, is poured over bread at every table. Christmas here is a long meal rather than a spectacle, and New Year ends with lentils for luck.
The 232 villas below lean towards the coast and its hills. Among them are a castle near Castagneto Carducci with 10th century walls, a chapel and full staff; a 19th century farmhouse on 35 hectares of Bolgheri wine country; and a house between the two Spanish fortresses of Porto Ercole, looking over the Tyrrhenian. Each is let as a private home for your party alone.

The olive harvest runs from late October into December, so Christmas coincides with oil that is still sharp, peppery and bright green.
Panforte and ricciarelli, the spiced and almond sweets of Siena, appear on Tuscan tables in December, alongside panettone and a glass of vin santo.
The Etruscan Coast and the Argentario have mild winters by northern standards: clear days, empty beaches and harbours returned to the fishing boats.

Questions before you choose
Will the pool be open at Christmas?
Usually not. Most villa pools open from May to October and are covered in winter. What matters in December is heating and a warm living room, so we confirm both with the owner before you commit.
How long should we stay over the festive period?
Many owners prefer a week or more between Christmas and Epiphany on 6 January, and some set their own arrival days. We ask for you and give the exact terms in our reply.
How do we reach the Tuscan coast in winter?
Pisa airport is about 1 hour from Bolgheri and less to Castiglioncello; for the Argentario, Rome Fiumicino is roughly 2 hours by car. Trains run along the coast, but a car is essential for the villas.
