Family villas in Tuscany, between pinewood and sea
Children remember Tuscany by its smells: pine resin in the heat, basil on the terrace, salt on the Etruscan Coast. The long sandy beaches south of Livorno shelve gently and are backed by umbrella pines, so a morning in the sea and an afternoon in the shade becomes the natural rhythm of the day. Inland, the medieval villages are small enough to walk without tears.
Every villa below has at least three bedrooms and a pool, a beach or equipment for families. A house in the Marina di Bibbona pinewood has a private path through the dunes to its own reserved beach area; a hilltop farmhouse in the Bolgheri wine country adds a clay tennis court to its 35 hectares; and a 19th century villa in Castiglioncello sits in a walled garden of palm trees, 300 m from the main square.

Between Cecina and San Vincenzo the sand slopes slowly into the sea, with pinewoods behind for shade: easy territory for small swimmers.
The Tyrrhenian is at its warmest from late July to early September, when even cautious children stay in until called for lunch.
Bolgheri, Castagneto Carducci and Suvereto are compact hill villages with gelato, shade and short walks from the car park.

Questions before you choose
Do villas rent by the week in summer?
In July and August most villas rent Saturday to Saturday, with a one week minimum. In spring and autumn owners are often more flexible, and shorter stays can sometimes be arranged.
Are the pools fenced or safe for toddlers?
It varies by villa, and we never assume. Tell us your children's ages in the enquiry and we will ask each owner about fencing, pool alarms, cots and high chairs before you decide.
When are the pools open?
Villa pools usually run from May to October. Late May and September suit families with children under school age: warm days, softer heat and far fewer people on the beaches.
