Positano for families

Family villas in Positano, with pools and sea

Positano with children is a question of logistics as much as beauty. The town is vertical, built on hundreds of steps, so the best family holidays here are based in a villa where the pool, the garden and the way down to the sea are part of the house. Days then shape themselves: a morning swim, a long lunch, a boat in the afternoon.

The 18 villas below all have three bedrooms or more. Some are reached by a private lift from the street; two have lifts running down to a beach from mid May to mid October; one sits on Viale Pasitea with an infinity pool over Fornillo beach and a private lemon grove. The largest, with eight bedrooms, has a cook on hand every day.

Fornillo for younger children

Fornillo beach, a short walk west of the main beach, is smaller and usually calmer, with sunbeds for hire and a gentler pace.

A boat day to Capri

A private boat from Positano reaches Capri in well under an hour, with swimming stops at grottoes on the way. Children tend to remember it most.

Count the steps

Ask about access before you book. We can tell you whether a villa has a lift, a level entrance or a long stair.

Good to know

Questions before you choose

Are the pools safe for small children?

Fencing is not standard in Italy, and many pools sit on open terraces above the sea. Tell us the ages of your children and we will ask each owner about fences, gates and cots.

When are pools open?

Most pools open from May to October. Heating varies by villa and may carry an extra charge, so we confirm it with the owner if you travel early or late in the season.

Is Positano easy with a pushchair?

Not really. Much of the town is stairs, so a baby carrier is more practical. Villas with a private lift or level access from the road remove most of the difficulty.
