Dolomites, the festive season

Christmas in the Dolomites, in a chalet villa

Christmas in the Dolomites has the order and warmth of an Alpine tradition. Wooden stalls fill the squares of Bolzano, Merano and Bressanone, church bells ring across snowy valleys, and at dusk the pale rock turns pink and violet in the glow the Ladin people call enrosadira. The slopes are rarely far from the door, and the evenings belong to the fireside.

The chalets below are built for long winter nights. In Cortina, one has a 20 m indoor pool with a waterfall, a soundproofed cinema and a Michelin starred chef in the kitchen. Above Colfosco, a chalet with 13 bedrooms is a few minutes' walk from the slopes, with its own spa and outdoor whirlpool, and above Selva a heated infinity pool looks straight at the Puez Odle peaks.

Markets of South Tyrol

The Christmas markets of Bolzano, Merano and Bressanone are among the oldest in Italy, with carved wood, mulled wine and spiced biscuits.

Snow is well managed

Natural snow at Christmas varies from year to year, but the linked ski areas rely on extensive snowmaking to keep slopes open.

Book festive weeks first

Good to know

Questions before you choose

How do we get to the Dolomites in winter?

Venice, Verona and Innsbruck airports are all within about three hours by road, depending on the valley. Winter tyres or chains are required on mountain roads, so a private transfer is often simplest.

Is snow guaranteed at Christmas?

No one can promise it, but the Dolomiti Superski area makes snow widely and most slopes are usually open by the festive season.

What is the minimum stay over Christmas?

Most chalets let by the week across the holidays, and some ask for longer. Ask about up to five in one enquiry; we reply within one working day with each owner's terms.
