Autumn in Chianti, a villa for the harvest
Autumn is when Chianti does what it was planted for. The last grapes come in, the cellars smell of fermenting must, and by late October the olive harvest begins, with nets spread under the trees and the mills pressing late into the night. Mornings are misty, afternoons clear and often warm enough to eat outside, and the woods turn copper and gold across the hills.
Among the 94 villas below are estates surrounded by the harvest itself. The Ghirlandaio family's 15th century summer estate at Impruneta has vineyards, olive groves and a lake; a 16th century ducal estate above Figline Valdarno looks over vineyards and cypress woods to the Apennines; and a 15th century house near Colle Val d'Elsa keeps a stone clad wine cellar and a private chapel.

Olio nuovo, pressed in November, is bright green and peppery. Local mills sell it by the litre; pour it on toasted bread with a little salt.
Autumn rain brings porcini to the Chianti woods, and white truffles are found in October and November around San Miniato, about 1 hour west.
Most outdoor pools close during October. If you travel in November, choose a house with a fireplace or a heated indoor pool.

Questions before you choose
When is the grape harvest in Chianti?
The harvest usually runs from mid September to mid October, depending on the year and the altitude of the vineyard. The olive harvest follows, from late October through November.
Is November too late for Chianti?
Not if you like it quiet. Days are shorter and cooler, around 12 to 15°C, and rain is more frequent, but the new oil, the colours and the empty roads make it a rewarding month.
Can we visit wineries during the harvest?
Many estates welcome visitors in autumn, though the busiest picking days are for work rather than tours, so book tastings ahead. Tell us your interests when you enquire and we will suggest where to base yourselves.
