Florence, October and November

Autumn in Florence, from a villa or city residence

Autumn may be the finest season in Florence. The summer heat has gone, the queues shorten, and the hills that ring the city turn to their harvest. Vineyards in the Chianti are picked, then the olives follow, and by November the trattorias pour the bright green new oil over toasted bread. Porcini, chestnuts and ribollita arrive on the menu as the evenings cool.

The homes on this page let you choose between city and country. A restored Tuscan house at the foot of Fiesole has an Italian garden only 6 km from the Duomo. A Chianti farmhouse with a barbecue loggia sits a 10 minute walk from Mercatale in Val di Pesa, and in the centre a Renaissance palazzo near the Ponte Vecchio is entered through a 17th century hall of columns and statues.
