Autumn in the Val d'Orcia from a wine estate villa
Autumn strips the Val d'Orcia back to its bones. The wheat fields are ploughed into pale clay, mist fills the valley floor at dawn, and the hill towns rise above it like islands. In Montalcino the Sangiovese for Brunello is picked, around San Giovanni d'Asso the white truffle season begins, and the hot springs of Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo feel their best in the cool air.
Several of the 41 villas below sit on wine estates. Near Sant'Angelo in Colle, a 16th century estate has made its own wine since 1580 and serves dinner in a restored barrel cellar; between Siena and Montalcino a restored villa stands on a 600 hectare wine estate, with tastings in the estate cellar; and near Sarteano a farmhouse of travertine blocks sits above its own organic vineyards.

The Crete Senesi, just north of the valley, yield prized white truffles in autumn. Truffle hunters with their dogs sometimes take visitors along.
At Bagni San Filippo, hot springs run over white limestone in the woods, free to visit and most inviting on a cool autumn morning.
The wooded slopes of Monte Amiata, which close the valley to the south, are known for chestnuts and porcini gathered through October.

Questions before you choose
When is the harvest in Montalcino?
Sangiovese for Brunello is usually picked from mid September into October, depending on the vintage. Estates are busy, so book any tastings in advance and expect a cellar full of activity.
Is the Val d'Orcia good in November?
For quiet and colour, yes. Days are cool, around 10 to 15°C, and nights colder, so a warm house matters more than a pool, which will be closed. We confirm heating for every villa.
How do we book?
Send one enquiry with up to five villas and your dates. We ask each owner about availability, price and minimum stay, and reply within one working day. Outside summer, arrival days are often flexible.
