Summer in Chianti from a villa among the vines
Summer in Chianti starts early. By eight the light is already warm on the vines, and the best hours for a walk to the next village or a drive to Florence or Siena come before eleven. After that the day belongs to the pool and the shade, resuming in the evening, when the hill towns fill with families eating outside and the air smells of cut hay and cypress.
Among the 94 villas below are some of the largest houses in the region. There is the Ghirlandaio family's 15th century summer estate at Impruneta, with a chapel frescoed by Ridolfo Ghirlandaio and a lake; a restored farmhouse just outside Panzano with 12 en suite bedrooms, a spa and a pool above the valley; and a 14th century watchtower above Poggibonsi with rose gardens and a 16 x 8 m pool.

On still June evenings fireflies rise from the vineyards and olive groves, one of the quiet pleasures of early summer in the hills.
Chianti lies between the two cities. Go in the early morning, park outside the historic centre, and be back at the pool by mid afternoon.
Tuscans eat late in summer. Take a table in a village square after dark, or stay at home with pecorino, salumi and a bottle of Chianti Classico.

Questions before you choose
How hot is Chianti in summer?
July and August days are hot, often above 30°C, while nights on the hills are noticeably cooler. June is the most comfortable summer month, with long days and a landscape that is still green.
How far is Chianti from Florence airport?
Most of Chianti is between 40 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes from Florence airport by car, and Pisa is about 1 hour 30 minutes. A car is essential, as the villas sit in open countryside.
Is it Saturday to Saturday in summer?
Generally, yes. From June to August most villas ask for a full week, arriving and leaving on a Saturday. Tell us if your flights need another day and we will ask the owner.
