Cortona climbs a steep hillside above the Val di Chiana, and from its upper streets the view runs across a broad patchwork of fields to Lake Trasimeno. In summer the town lives outdoors: dinners in the piazzas, evening walks along the walls, the valley below fading to blue. By day, the hills offer shade, and the lake is close enough for an afternoon swim.

Hill houses catch the breeze after sunset. Cortona's height makes summer nights noticeably fresher than the valley floor.
The Val di Chiana gives its name to the white Chianina cattle, grilled as thick steaks, and to a table of hand rolled pici pasta.

How do we reach Cortona?
Florence and Perugia airports are about an hour and a half and 45 minutes away respectively, Rome about two and a half hours. Regional trains stop at Camucia Cortona and Terontola, but a car is needed for the villas.
Is a full week required in summer?
Most houses rent Saturday to Saturday in July and August. In June, and in some smaller houses, shorter stays may be accepted; we ask the owners.
