A Sicilian summer runs to its own clock. Mornings belong to the sea, the middle of the day to shade and a long lunch, and the evening to the passeggiata, when towns such as Taormina and Ortigia fill again. Breakfast might be almond granita with a warm brioche, as it has been here for generations.
Most of the villas below face the Ionian Sea on the east coast. At Giardini Naxos, steps lead from the pool terrace down to the lava rocks, with Taormina 8 km away. Near Siracusa, houses in the Plemmirio marine reserve open onto clear water, and at Fontane Bianche a heated infinity pool sits 30 m from the sea. Inland near Ragusa, an 18 m pool looks over olive groves to the coast.

Sicilians take granita with brioche at breakfast in summer. Almond, lemon and black mulberry are the classic flavours.
The Plemmirio reserve guards the coast south of Ortigia, and its clear water rewards anyone with a mask and snorkel.
July and August are hot. Plan beach time early and late, and keep the afternoon for the pool and a rest indoors.

Questions before you choose
How do we reach the east coast?
Catania airport is the natural arrival point, about an hour from Taormina and from Siracusa by car. Palermo suits the north and west. A car is almost essential in Sicily.
Do villas rent Saturday to Saturday?
In July and August most villas rent by the week, Saturday to Saturday, and some ask for longer. In June there is often more flexibility, which we confirm with each owner.
