Family villas in Sicily, close to the sea
Sicily is generous with children. Restaurants welcome them at any hour, a gelato or a granita is never far away, and the island's stories of Greek temples and a smoking volcano hold the attention of even reluctant sightseers. The south east has long sandy beaches with gentle water, while the coast near Taormina offers rock pools and pebbles for older swimmers.
Every villa below has at least three bedrooms and room for everyone. Near Arenella, a contemporary house has a private path down to the beach; below Taormina another has its own route to the sand and an outdoor bar looking out to sea. The Siracusa promontory house has three interlinked pools and a natural rock pool. For larger families, an estate near Augusta and a house with 10 bedrooms near Ragusa have pools with space to spare.

Beaches between Siracusa and Ragusa are mostly sandy and shelve gently, which suits small children better than the rocky north east.
Guided excursions on Etna, by cable car, jeep and on foot, are a highlight for older children. Bring warm layers even in summer.
Arancini, pasta alla Norma and fresh ricotta please young and old alike, and most trattorie will happily prepare a simpler plate.

Questions before you choose
Which part of Sicily is best with young children?
The south east, around Siracusa, Noto and Ragusa, has sandy beaches and shallow water. The Taormina coast is more dramatic but rockier, better for confident swimmers.
Are pools safe for small children?
Pool fencing and alarms vary from villa to villa, and pools are usually open from May to October. Tell us your children's ages and we ask each owner about safety features.
How long must we stay?
In high season most villas rent Saturday to Saturday. Send dates and up to five villas in one enquiry and we reply within one working day with availability and price.
