September in Sicily, in a villa by the sea
September may be the finest month on the island. The sea has had all summer to warm, the August crowds have gone home, and the evenings are still long enough for dinner outside. On the slopes of Etna the grape harvest begins, and inland the almond crop is gathered and dried.
The villas below are chosen for making the most of that late warmth. Near Giardini Naxos, steps descend from the pool terrace to the lava rocks. In the Plemmirio reserve outside Siracusa, a heated infinity pool faces the turquoise water, and near Augusta an estate with a walled saltwater pool looks towards Etna. From Ragusa, a pool with a beach entry gazes over olive groves, close to the baroque towns that are gentler to explore once the heat eases.

After three months of sun, the water around Sicily is warmer in September than in June, and often stays pleasant into October.
Etna's vineyards, among the highest in Italy, are picked from late September. Many estates welcome visitors for tastings.

Questions before you choose
Is early October still good for swimming?
Most years it is. The sea keeps much of its summer warmth and pools are generally open until October. A heated pool adds comfort as the evenings cool.
Do villas still rent by the week?
Many do in September, often Saturday to Saturday, though owners tend to be more flexible than in August. We ask about shorter stays if you need them.
