Few pleasures compare with walking from breakfast straight into the Mediterranean. Sicily's coast changes character as you travel: dark lava rock and pebbles near Taormina, pale sand and shallow water around Siracusa, and limestone cliffs along the north coast at Cefalù.
Every villa below has a direct or easy route to the water. On the cliffs at Cefalù, a house designed by its architect owners has steps and a gate straight down to the sea. Below Taormina, a private path leads to the beach, and at Arenella another runs down to the shore. Near Siracusa, a promontory villa has private sea access, and a small stone clad villa comes with the beach and spa of a five star resort.

Lava rock and ladders suit strong swimmers and snorkellers. Families with toddlers usually prefer the sandy bays of the south east.
Rocky entries and sea urchins are part of Sicilian swimming. A pair of water shoes makes platforms and coves far more comfortable.
Cefalù has a station on the Palermo line, so the old town and its Norman cathedral are easy to reach without a car.

Questions before you choose
Is beach access private?
In Italy the shoreline itself is public, so access is private but the beach usually is not. Coves reached by a villa's own steps tend to be very quiet.
When is the sea warm enough?
Most swimmers find the water pleasant from June to early October, warmest in August and September. Pools, usually open from May to October, cover the cooler weeks.
