Liguria, June to August

Summer on the Italian Riviera, from your own villa

The Italian Riviera is a coast of steep green hills falling into a deep blue sea. Towns are stacked in pastel colours around small harbours, olive terraces climb behind them, and trains and boats link one village to the next. Summer here means swimming from rocks, lunch of trofie with pesto, and an evening walk along a harbour front.

The villas below make the most of that vertical landscape. Above Portofino, a pink Ligurian house among terraced olive groves has 150 steps down to its own swimming platform. At Zoagli, a 1928 Art Déco house on the cliffs of the Gulf of Tigullio has painted ceilings and a heated infinity pool. Above Monterosso, a former Benedictine monastery keeps its cloister, and above Sanremo a sea view lawn sits among private hills.

Travel by boat

Ferries link Santa Margherita, Portofino and San Fruttuoso, and in summer continue along to the Cinque Terre, sparing you narrow roads.

Swim from the rocks

Much of the coast is rock and small shingle coves. Platforms and ladders make swimming easy for confident swimmers.

Pesto where it began

Liguria is the home of pesto and focaccia. Try it with trofie, and taste focaccia fresh from a bakery in the morning.

Questions before you choose

Which airport is closest?

Genoa serves Portofino, the Gulf of Tigullio and the Cinque Terre. For Sanremo and the western Riviera, Nice is often more convenient, with the French border close by.

Do we need a car?

Often you can manage without. Trains run along the whole coast and boats connect many villages. A car helps for hillside villas, though parking in small towns can be difficult.

How does the enquiry work?

A single enquiry can cover up to five villas and your chosen dates. In summer most rent Saturday to Saturday. We reply within one working day with confirmed availability and price.
