Why go

Why choose Lazio Countryside

Beyond the capital, Lazio unfolds into volcanic lakes, Etruscan tombs, Renaissance gardens and a coastline of quiet coves. It remains one of Italy's least explored regions, which is precisely its charm: villages where life follows the harvest, farmhouses among olive groves and hazelnut orchards, and a pace far removed from Rome, which still lies within easy reach for a day of sightseeing.

The Lazio countryside suits travellers who like discovery over checklists, families wanting space and swimming, and groups looking for a large villa with a pool and garden. Expect honest trattorias, thermal springs and astonishing gardens largely free of crowds.

Ideal for: Combining with Rome, Families, Quiet stays · Relaxed, with drives between villages and lakes

Practical tips

  1. A car is essential: public transport between villages and lakes is limited.
  2. Historic centres such as Viterbo and Tivoli have ZTL zones; park outside the walls.
  3. Civita di Bagnoregio charges an entry ticket at the bridge, and the walk is steep; visit early or late in summer.
  4. Ninfa opens only on selected days and requires advance booking.
  5. Ferries to Ponza fill up in July and August, and cars are restricted on the island in summer, so travel as a foot passenger.
  6. Book Villa Lante, Caprarola and Bomarzo with their opening days in mind, as some close on Mondays.
Questions

Lazio Countryside: frequently asked

Is the Lazio countryside a good alternative to Tuscany?

Yes, for travellers who want similar landscapes, gardens and food with fewer visitors. Northern Lazio borders Tuscany and Umbria, so both are within reach.

Can you swim in the lakes of Lazio?

Lake Bolsena and Lake Bracciano are both popular for swimming, with clean water and small beaches. Bracciano bans motorboats, which keeps it especially peaceful.

How far is the Lazio countryside from Rome?

The Castelli Romani are about 30 minutes away, Lake Bracciano under an hour and Lake Bolsena about 1h30 by car.

How do you get to Ponza?

Ferries and hydrofoils sail from Formia all year, with extra seasonal routes from Anzio and Terracina. The hydrofoil from Formia takes about 1h20.
