Why go

Why choose Capri

Rising sheer from the sea at the mouth of the Bay of Naples, Capri has seduced Roman emperors, writers and film stars for two thousand years. Limestone cliffs plunge into water of extraordinary clarity, the Faraglioni stand guard off the southern shore and lanes of whitewashed villas wind between lemon trees and bougainvillea.

The island has two souls: Capri town, all elegant boutiques and the famous piazzetta, and Anacapri, higher, greener and more tranquil. A villa here suits those who love the sea above all, couples marking a special occasion and families who enjoy evenings out on foot once the day visitors have sailed home.

Ideal for: Couples, Celebrations, Design lovers · Slow, on foot and by boat

What to see

The highlights

01
Grotta Azzurra

A sea cave entered by small rowing boat through an opening barely a metre high, where reflected sunlight turns the water a luminous blue. Visits are suspended when the sea is rough.

02
The Faraglioni

Three limestone stacks rising off the south coast, the emblem of the island. The middle one has a natural arch that boats can pass through.

03
Villa Jovis

The ruins of the Emperor Tiberius's grandest residence crown the eastern headland. The walk up through quiet lanes ends with sweeping views over both gulfs.

04
Villa San Michele, Anacapri

The house and garden built by the Swedish physician and writer Axel Munthe, filled with antiquities and perched above Marina Grande. Its pergola is among the most romantic spots on the island.

05
Monte Solaro

The island's highest point, at 589 metres, reached by a single seat chairlift from Anacapri. The summit looks across to Vesuvius, the Amalfi Coast and the Faraglioni.

06
Gardens of Augustus and Via Krupp

Terraced gardens above Marina Piccola frame the Faraglioni, while Via Krupp zigzags down the cliff below. The path is periodically closed for safety work, so check before planning to walk it.

07
Certosa di San Giacomo

A fourteenth century Carthusian monastery with two cloisters and a museum of paintings by Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach. It is a cool, peaceful retreat in the middle of the day.

08
Arco Naturale and the Pizzolungo walk

A natural rock arch hangs above the eastern coast, and a cliffside path continues past grottoes and villas towards the Faraglioni. It is one of the island's most beautiful walks.

When to go

The year, season by season

From May to early October. Most hotels and restaurants open from Easter to October; in winter the island is very quiet.

Spring

From Easter the island reopens, gardens burst into flower and walks are at their best. The sea warms through May and day visitors are still manageable.

Summer

Long sunny days, warm water and a glamorous evening scene. Day trippers crowd the centre in the middle of the day, so plan sightseeing early and late, and book everything ahead.

Autumn

September and early October bring warm seas, softer light and a more relaxed atmosphere. Many hotels, boutiques and restaurants close from late October.

Winter

The island becomes intimate and local, with mild days and fewer ferries. Many establishments close, so a villa with staff is the best way to enjoy the quiet.

Practical tips

  1. Leave the car on the mainland: non resident vehicles are restricted on Capri for most of the year, and the island is small, with taxis, buses and the funicular.
  2. Porter services at Marina Grande can deliver luggage to your villa, which is invaluable in lanes closed to cars.
  3. Visit the Grotta Azzurra early in the morning and be ready for cancellations in rough seas or strong winds.
  4. Ferries can be suspended in bad weather, especially hydrofoils, so allow a buffer day before an international flight.
  5. Book beach club loungers, restaurants and boats well in advance for July and August.
  6. Comfortable shoes matter: many villas are reached by footpaths and steps.
Questions

Capri: frequently asked

Is it better to stay in Capri town or Anacapri?

Capri town suits those who want shopping, restaurants and evening life on the doorstep. Anacapri is quieter and greener, with a more village feel and easy access to walks and the west coast.

How do I get to Capri from Naples airport?

Take a taxi or private car to Molo Beverello, about 20 minutes, then a fast ferry of about 50 minutes. A private helicopter is the fastest option.

Is the Blue Grotto worth visiting?

Yes, if conditions allow. Go early in the morning, as visits by rowing boat are suspended in rough seas and queues build quickly in summer.

Can you bring a car to Capri?

Generally not. Vehicles belonging to non residents are restricted for most of the year, and getting around is easy by taxi, bus and funicular.

How many days do you need on Capri?

Four nights allow you to see the main sights and enjoy a boat day at a relaxed pace. A week lets you settle into island life and explore the Amalfi Coast by sea.
